I think this is a good picture that represents the Great Depression. It shows poor farmers with raggedy cloths, barefoot, and outside of a house not well built. The doors have no knobs, there are no windows, the wooden planks that make up the porch are uneven, the porch is slanted, and curving in a bit, and the wooden beams that support the roof seem very thin and brittle. The children, men, and lady all seem down. They're all huddle up into a corner which makes me think this is a way of keeping safe. This picture seems to have been taken on a farm. Their attentions all seemed to be on something different. The women and man on the left side's attention seemed to be focused on something, while the man on the right's attention is focused on something else.
In this picture it shows a negro man under a sign at what seems to be a train station. This sign depicts the racism at the time, around the Great Depression, stating "Colored Waiting Room". The man's attention seems to be focus on some flyers on the wall. Here's where I noticed the middle flyer that says "True Story, Hitler's Love Life Revealed". Unsure if this relates to the racism behind this picture. I noticed that the vehicle is filled with only colored people. You can spot a child and some women. The vehicle (unsure if it's a train or car) seems to say Carolina Coach Company, which upon further research was founded in 1925. This time is very close to the Great Depression, which started in 1930. I wonder why the photographer decided to take this photo at this exact time. It captures much racism perfectly.
Secondhand clothing stores and pawn shops on Beale Street, Memphis, Tennessee
This picture shows some men standing around in front of some buildings, chatting with each other. When I first looked at this picture my attention was drawn to the sign. "Hotel Clark", pretty harmless. Upon further inspection I noticed the small sign underneath, "The Best Service for COLORED ONLY". This picture was obviously taken around the time when everything, hotels, restaurants, bathrooms, etc., were separate between blacks and whites. The men, who seem to be negro, are standing in front of Hotel Clark. It seems to be in a small town since the sidewalk isn't very busy.
Street scene near bus station in Durham, North Carolina
In this picture I first noticed some women walking. I particularly noticed the two women who seem to be walking together. Friends out on the town for some girl time? Maybe. There's a sign above them that says "Southern (unreadable word) Ice Cream". And to the side you can clearly see a door that has the words "WHITE LADIES ONLY" painted on t. Whether or not this is a rest room or a doorway to a beauty salon of some sort is unclear. I think this photograph was mostly for those who were all for the separation between blacks and whites. To show that you could casually put a door in the middle of a busy town without anyone protesting. Especially since at this time white's were more superior than blacks. If this photograph had been taken today, the reaction would be much different. Countless people would protest, saying that the door should be painted over. Everyone would be fired up about it, calling it a disgrace, racist, disgusting. The whole country furious over three words.
